PCI slots in a computer allow you to install a wide variety of expansion cards, ranging from additional USB ports to wireless network cards or dedicated sound cards. Installing a PCI card is one of the easiest updates you can do on a computer, and in just a few minutes you can complete this process. Read step 1 below to learn how to do it.
Steps
Unplug your computer. Turn off your computer and then unplug the power cord and all other cables that are connected to the back. If you have been using the computer recently, wait a few minutes for it to cool before continuing.
· Note: Some PCI cards may require you to install the drivers before installing them, however, this is not very common. Always read the card's documentation before installing it.
Open your computer PCI cards are installed on the computer's motherboard. To do this, you will need to open the computer so that you can access its internal components. Support the box or tower on the table or bench, leaving the rear connectors as close as possible to the work surface. This way you can make sure you have access to the motherboard after removing the side panel.
· Most boxes use butterfly screws, which you can loosen by hand. However, other screws may require a Phillips screwdriver.
· Avoid supporting the computer on a carpet. The friction of the carpet could generate static electricity, which would then result in an electrostatic discharge.
Identify the PCI slot. On the motherboard, you will see rectangular slots that correspond to ports on the back of the box. Usually, there are one or two slots near the processor, which are used for graphics cards, followed by one or more PCI slots. You may already have an expansion card installed, or they may also be empty.
· If you have problems locating the PCI slots, consult the documentation of your motherboard.
Remove the metal cover of the port. Each PCI slot has a port associated with it on the back of the computer. When nothing is installed, this port is covered with a small metal shield. You can remove it by unscrewing the screw that holds it in place and then directly lifting it to remove it from the box. Save the screw you removed.
· Do not remove the protectors from the slots that you are not going to use because if you do that, you would let more dust enter the computer.
Connect to the ground. Before handling any component of the computer, you should make sure you are properly grounded. In this way, you will avoid electrostatic discharge that could damage or destroy the delicate components of the computer.
· The best way to properly ground yourself is to use an electrostatic wristband. Connect the bracelet to any exposed metal part of your computer case. You can also connect to the ground by touching a metallic water tap.
Remove the card from its packaging. With great care, remove the new card from the antistatic bag, taking it from the sides. Do not touch the contacts that are along the bottom and also try to avoid touching the circuits.
Insert the card. Align the contacts on the bottom of the PCI card with the PCI slot where you are going to insert it. Press the card firmly down to fit the slot. Make sure the card is level and fully seated in the slot before continuing. Get PCI cards which are easy to connect with the server
· If you have space, leave a free slot between the new card and any other card already installed. This will allow cards and components to remain fresh.
Secure the card. Find the screw that you removed from the metal cover of the port and use it to secure the card in that same hole. Adjust the screw firmly but not so tight or you could spoil it.
· Your card will be suspended horizontally when you assemble the box again, so it is very important that it be well secured.
Close the computer case. Replace the side panel and secure it. Return the computer to your workplace and reconnect all cables. If your new PCI card adds ports to your computers, such as USB ports or audio connectors do not connect anything yet.
Install the new drivers. Turn on your computer and wait for the operating system to load. Depending on your operating system, it may detect and install the card automatically. If not, insert the disk that came with the card and installs the drivers using the installation program included in the disk.
· Normally you will need to install the drivers so that the card can work properly.
· You may have to restart the computer once the drivers have been installed.
Connect the devices to the card. If your card is a USB card, you can now connect your USB devices. If it's a sound card, you can connect your speakers or speakers. If it's a network card, you can connect your antenna.
Tips
Since you have to open the computer to install the card, you could take a few minutes to clean the dust that has accumulated. This way you can prevent your computer from overheating. Use compressed air or a small vacuum to remove dust.
